• The Victory Garden Initiative promotes the use of our own backyards (and front yards and rooftops and patios) for the production of food. We are gardeners supporting other gardeners in their own paths towards a self-sufficient, sustainable, and healthy food supply. Through mentoring, modeling and outreach we aim to make Victory Gardening a way of life for everyone. Gardening is the new protest, the passive resistance of our time. Welcome to The Victory Garden Initiative

Thanks for visiting The Victory Garden Initiative website. We are 80 members and going strong. We are gardeners supporting gardeners, novices and experts. Please use this website to help you in your own garden, use it to keep up with our group, or use it to join our cause. We are currently creating a strong movement in the Milwaukee Area, that will branch out to have Victory Garden Coordinators in every community, building local, resilient gardening communities.

  1. Hi,

I’m in urban Los Angeles in a house on a residential street.

Last year I did container tomatoes and cucumbers. Tasty but they really needed to be in the ground – or in much bigger pots.

I’ve nurtured an orange tree for years and it gives in abundance now. And I’ve just embarked on an experiment with dwarf acocado trees, Holiday Acocado, in pots trained to a 4 foot trelis.

One will go in my back yard. One will go on my drivway – that gets a lot of sun. And one will go in the ground in my front yard.

My neighbor has five raised beds full of vegetables and she is generous to her neighbors. I’m hoping my avocado crop will allow me to do the same and get into vegetable and fruit trading with fellow gardeners.

What suggestions do you have for pest control? In our community we have racoons, possums, rats, squirrels and crows. Can you suggest measures I can take to protect the fruit without endangering people or birds or pets?

    Thank you!

    best regards,

    Joanna
